When people think about moving to America, they often imagine opportunity, freedom, and a better life. While those things can be true, there are also many surprises that nobody talks about.

One of the biggest surprises for me was how different everyday life felt. Things that seemed normal in Burma suddenly became different. The way people spoke to each other, the way businesses operated, and even simple things like grocery shopping felt unfamiliar.

Another surprise was how independent people are expected to be. In Burma, family often plays a huge role in daily life. There is usually someone nearby to help, give advice, or simply be around. In America, many people handle everything on their own. At first, that felt lonely.

I was also surprised by how much paperwork seems to exist for everything. Whether it’s school forms, government documents, banking, or healthcare, there always seemed to be another form to fill out.

One thing I did appreciate was the opportunity to build a different future. Even though the adjustment was difficult, I slowly realized that America offered possibilities that would have been difficult for me to access back home.

Looking back now, I understand that culture shock is a normal part of immigration. The surprises, frustrations, and confusion were all part of learning how to navigate a new country.

If you’re new to America, give yourself time. The things that feel strange today may eventually become part of your normal life tomorrow.

I couldn’t afford this back then but now I do!
