Frequently Asked Questions
What is a priority date?
A priority date generally determines an applicant’s place in the immigrant visa queue. In many family-based cases, it is the date USCIS properly received the immigrant petition.
Does the date gap show how much longer I will wait?
No. It only compares calendar dates. Visa Bulletin movement can speed up, slow down, stop, or move backward.
What does “current” mean?
“Current” means no cutoff date applies to that category and chargeability area for the selected chart and bulletin month. It does not guarantee an interview or visa approval.
Should I use Final Action Dates or Dates for Filing?
That depends on the purpose and the instructions controlling the case. Final Action Dates relate to visa availability for final action. Dates for Filing can indicate when document submission may begin, subject to NVC or USCIS instructions.
