Study in Germany for Burmese Students: Student Visa, Costs, Work Rights & Staying After Graduation

Study in Germany: A Burmese Student Roadmap

For Burmese students looking for a legal way to leave Myanmar, continue their education and potentially build a future abroad, Germany can be an important option to consider.

Germany has more than 400 universities and colleges, and the German Embassy in Yangon specifically provides information for Myanmar students interested in studying in Germany. According to the Embassy, around 420,000 international students and doctoral candidates were enrolled in Germany during the 2025/2026 winter semester.

A German student visa is not a permanent-residence visa.

However, studying in Germany can potentially become the beginning of a longer immigration pathway:

Study in Germany

Graduate

Stay up to 18 months to look for qualified work

Switch to a skilled-worker residence permit or EU Blue Card

Potentially qualify for permanent residence

Potentially qualify for German citizenship later

That makes Germany different from a country where international students are automatically expected to leave immediately after graduation.

Can Burmese Citizens Study in Germany?

Yes.

Myanmar citizens can apply to German universities and, if admitted and otherwise eligible, apply for a German national visa for study.

Because Myanmar citizens normally require a visa before entering Germany for long-term study, the student visa process should usually begin before traveling.

The German Embassy in Yangon handles student visa applications for applicants residing in Myanmar.

What Do You Need for a German Student Visa?

The main requirements generally include:

  • Admission to a recognized German university or higher-education institution
  • Proof that you can financially support yourself
  • Required language ability for your course
  • Valid passport
  • Health insurance
  • Required academic documents
  • Completed visa application
  • Any additional documents requested by the German Embassy

Your exact requirements depend on your university, course and individual situation.

Step 1: Get Accepted by a German University

Before applying for a standard student visa, you normally need admission to a recognized German higher-education institution.

Germany has:

  • Public universities
  • Universities of applied sciences
  • Technical universities
  • Private universities
  • Art and music schools
  • Other recognized higher-education institutions

Do not assume that every school advertising itself online is recognized.

Always verify the institution before paying tuition or other large fees.

Do Burmese High School Qualifications Automatically Qualify for German University?

Not necessarily.

Germany has specific rules concerning whether a foreign school-leaving qualification provides direct university entrance.

Depending on your education history, you may:

  • Qualify directly for university
  • Need additional university study first
  • Need to attend a preparatory program known as Studienkolleg
  • Need to pass additional examinations

Your eligibility depends on the qualification you hold.

This means a Burmese student should check academic eligibility before spending money on applications or visa preparation.

What Is Studienkolleg?

Some international students whose school qualifications do not provide direct admission to a German university may need to attend a Studienkolleg.

Studienkolleg is a preparatory course that helps students become academically ready for German university.

Students generally study subjects related to their future university field and later take an assessment examination.

Passing the required examination may allow the student to begin eligible university study.

Whether you need Studienkolleg depends on your previous education.

German or English-Taught Programs?

Germany offers both German-taught and English-taught university programs.

German-Taught Programs

These usually require proof of German language proficiency.

The exact required level depends on the university and program.

Common accepted examinations may include:

  • TestDaF
  • DSH
  • telc
  • Goethe certificates
  • Other university-approved examinations

English-Taught Programs

Some bachelor’s programs and many master’s programs are taught in English.

These may require proof of English proficiency through examinations such as:

  • IELTS
  • TOEFL
  • Other accepted tests

However, even if your degree is taught entirely in English, learning German can still be extremely useful for:

  • Finding part-time work
  • Finding housing
  • Everyday life
  • Internships
  • Finding employment after graduation
  • Long-term residence in Germany

Germany’s official immigration portal notes that some study programs require approximately B2-level language ability, depending on the program.

How Much Money Do You Need for a German Student Visa?

One of the biggest requirements is proving that you can financially support yourself.

For 2026, Germany’s official immigration portal states that students can generally demonstrate sufficient funds through a blocked account containing at least:

€11,904

for one year.

That is approximately:

€992 per month

However, do not assume the minimum required immigration amount represents everything you will actually spend.

Your real costs may include:

  • Housing
  • Food
  • Health insurance
  • Transportation
  • University semester contributions
  • Books
  • Phone and internet
  • Clothing
  • Travel
  • Visa expenses
  • Residence permit fees
  • Emergency expenses

Large cities can be considerably more expensive than smaller German university towns.

What Is a Blocked Account?

A blocked account, or Sperrkonto, is a special type of account used by many international students to demonstrate that they have enough money to support themselves.

You deposit the required amount before traveling.

You cannot simply withdraw the entire balance immediately after arriving in Germany.

Instead, only a limited amount becomes available each month.

The purpose is to show German authorities that you will have money available throughout your stay rather than spending the entire amount immediately.

Germany’s Federal Foreign Office explains that blocked-account providers have different fees and conditions and that applicants should research providers carefully. The German government does not guarantee a particular private blocked-account company.

Is a Blocked Account the Only Way to Prove Money?

No.

Germany recognizes other forms of financial proof in qualifying situations.

Depending on the case, these may include:

  • A blocked account
  • Scholarship
  • Declaration of commitment from an eligible person in Germany
  • Certain proof involving parents’ financial circumstances
  • Bank guarantee
  • Other accepted financial arrangements

The German Federal Foreign Office lists several possible methods.

Always follow the specific instructions provided for your visa application.

Are German Universities Free?

Many public universities in Germany do not charge the type of high tuition fees common in countries such as the United States.

However, “free university” does not mean studying in Germany costs nothing.

Students may still have to pay:

  • Semester contributions
  • Administrative charges
  • Student-service fees
  • Transportation-related charges
  • Health insurance
  • Housing
  • Living expenses

Certain universities, programs and German states may also charge tuition, especially in particular circumstances or for some non-EU students.

Private universities can charge substantial tuition.

Always check the specific university’s current fees.

Scholarships for Burmese Students

Some students may be able to obtain scholarships.

One major place to research is the:

DAAD — German Academic Exchange Service

DAAD maintains scholarship information for international students and researchers.

Scholarships can be very competitive.

Do not assume that receiving university admission automatically means Germany will pay for your studies.

Search separately for:

  • DAAD scholarships
  • University scholarships
  • Research scholarships
  • Master’s scholarships
  • Doctoral funding
  • Foundation scholarships

The German Embassy Yangon also directs Myanmar students to DAAD resources.

Can International Students Work in Germany?

Yes.

Current German rules generally allow international university students to work:

Up to 140 full days per year

or

280 half days per year

Alternatively, students can generally work up to:

20 hours per week

during the applicable study period.

Certain student-related jobs may be treated differently under the rules.

Working can help with living expenses, but you should not build your entire financial plan around finding a job immediately after arriving.

A job is not guaranteed.

Your primary legal purpose in Germany remains studying.

What Kind of Jobs Can Students Do?

International students commonly look for work in areas such as:

  • University assistant positions
  • Restaurants
  • Cafés
  • Hotels
  • Retail
  • Warehouses
  • Delivery
  • Customer service
  • Technology
  • Research
  • Tutoring
  • Office support

Students with strong German usually have more employment options.

Someone studying computer science, engineering or another professional field may also find internships or student jobs related to their future career.

Can You Bring Your Spouse or Children?

Family reunification may sometimes be possible for international students, but eligibility depends on the individual situation.

Germany may consider factors such as:

  • Your residence status
  • Financial ability
  • Housing
  • Marriage status
  • Length and purpose of stay
  • Family member eligibility

Do not assume that receiving a student visa automatically allows your entire family to move with you.

Check the family-reunification requirements separately.

Can You Stay in Germany After Graduation?

Yes — and this is one of the biggest reasons Germany may be attractive to Burmese students.

After successfully graduating from a German university, international graduates can generally apply for a residence permit allowing them to remain in Germany for up to:

18 months

to look for qualified employment.

During this period, Germany allows graduates to work while searching for qualified employment.

Once you find a qualifying professional job, you may be able to switch to another residence permit.

What Happens When You Find a Job?

Depending on your job, salary, qualifications and other requirements, you may potentially change to:

Skilled Worker Residence Permit

or

EU Blue Card

or another appropriate employment residence permit.

This is where a German student visa can become the beginning of a longer immigration pathway.

Can Studying in Germany Lead to Permanent Residence?

Yes — potentially.

But not directly.

A student residence permit itself is temporary.

You do not normally graduate and automatically receive permanent residence.

Instead, the path may look like:

Student residence permit

Graduate from German university

18-month job-search residence permit

Find qualified employment

Skilled-worker permit or EU Blue Card

Meet permanent-residence requirements

Apply for settlement permit

Germany has a special rule for graduates of German universities.

A person who successfully completes higher education in Germany and then holds an eligible skilled-worker residence permit for at least two years may potentially qualify for a settlement permit if the other requirements are satisfied.

Those other conditions currently include matters such as:

  • Eligible employment
  • 24 months of pension contributions
  • Approximately B1 German
  • Knowledge of German legal and social life
  • Sufficient housing

A settlement permit allows a person to remain in Germany permanently.

Can Studying in Germany Eventually Lead to German Citizenship?

Potentially, yes.

But again:

Student visa ≠ citizenship.

Germany currently generally allows eligible people to apply for naturalization after more than five years of legal residence, provided they satisfy the other requirements.

However, Germany specifically states that a student residence permit by itself is not sufficient residence status for naturalization.

By the time someone applies, they generally need permanent residence or another qualifying residence permit that can lead to permanent residence.

Other current citizenship requirements generally include:

  • Sufficient German language ability, normally at least B1
  • Ability to financially support yourself and qualifying dependents
  • Knowledge of Germany’s legal and social system
  • No disqualifying criminal convictions
  • Required declarations concerning Germany’s constitutional order
  • Other applicable requirements

So a student’s possible long-term pathway might look like:

Arrive as student

Study for several years

Graduate

Get qualified job

Switch immigration status

Work and establish yourself

Permanent residence

German citizenship if eligible

Does Time as a Student Count Toward Citizenship?

This subject is more complicated than simply saying:

“Five years as a student = German passport.”

That is not correct.

Germany currently requires more than simply reaching a number of years.

A student residence permit alone is specifically not sufficient status to naturalize. The applicant needs an eligible residence status when applying and must satisfy the other citizenship requirements.

Because immigration and citizenship rules can change, students planning a long-term future should check the law applying when they become eligible.

What About Permanent EU Residence?

Germany also has a separate EU long-term residence permit.

However, German government guidance states that certain residence permits issued for educational purposes cannot themselves qualify for permanent EU residence in the ordinary way.

That is another reason students generally need to transition into employment or another qualifying residence status rather than simply remaining a student forever.

Student Visa vs Ausbildung — Which Is Better?

Neither is automatically better.

They are designed for different people.

Student Visa May Be Better If You:

  • Want a university degree
  • Have strong academic qualifications
  • Can finance your studies
  • Want a professional career requiring a degree
  • Want to study engineering, computer science, business, science or another university subject
  • May eventually want postgraduate education

Ausbildung May Be Better If You:

  • Prefer practical career training
  • Want to work while training
  • Want a training salary
  • Do not necessarily need a university degree
  • Are interested in nursing, trades, IT, logistics, hospitality or another vocational career
  • Are willing to learn German and enter the workforce earlier

Both routes can potentially lead to employment and long-term residence.

Can You Come to Germany Without University Admission and Search for a School?

Potentially.

Germany also has a separate visa for seeking a place in higher education.

Under the current rules, qualifying applicants may be allowed to stay in Germany for up to:

9 months

while seeking admission to university or completing certain preparatory measures.

Germany currently lists a financial requirement of approximately:

€1,091 per month in 2026

for this route.

This is different from the regular student visa for someone who already has admission.

Applying for a German Student Visa From Myanmar

The German Embassy Yangon provides specific instructions for Myanmar students.

The Embassy’s student information states that students who have been admitted to a German university, or where applicable a preparatory course or Studienkolleg, may apply for a study visa.

The Embassy advises applicants to obtain their admission as early as possible.

Student Visa Process: Myanmar → Germany

Step 1 — Decide What You Want to Study

Research your intended degree.

Examples include:

  • Computer science
  • Engineering
  • Business
  • Economics
  • Nursing-related academic programs
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • Social sciences
  • Humanities

Do not choose a university simply because someone tells you it is easy to get a visa.

Choose a program you can realistically complete.

Step 2 — Check Whether Your Burmese Education Qualifies

Determine whether you can enter a German university directly or whether you need:

  • Additional education
  • Studienkolleg
  • Preparatory study
  • Additional examinations

Do this early.

Step 3 — Check the Language Requirement

Determine whether your course is:

German taught

or

English taught

Then obtain the required language certificate.

Step 4 — Apply to Universities

Depending on the institution, applications may be made:

  • Directly through the university
  • Through a centralized application service such as uni-assist
  • Through another specified university application system

Follow the individual university instructions.

Step 5 — Receive Admission

Keep your official university admission letter.

You will need it for your visa application.

Step 6 — Arrange Your Financial Proof

For 2026, the standard student blocked-account benchmark is:

€11,904

unless another acceptable form of financial proof applies.

Do not transfer large amounts of money to an unknown agent claiming they will “hold it for Germany.”

Use legitimate financial arrangements accepted by German authorities.

Step 7 — Arrange Health Insurance

You will need appropriate health-insurance coverage.

Students normally also need health insurance while residing in Germany.

Check the requirements applying before entry and after university enrollment.

Step 8 — Apply for Your German National Visa

Follow current instructions from the:

German Embassy Yangon

and Germany’s:

Consular Services Portal

Do not rely solely on Facebook groups or private agents.

Step 9 — Prepare Your Documents

Documents may include:

  • Valid passport
  • University admission
  • Visa application
  • Passport photographs
  • Proof of finances
  • Academic certificates
  • Transcripts
  • Language certificate
  • Health-insurance evidence
  • Motivation or study documents where requested
  • Other documents required by the Embassy

Documents not in German or English may require an appropriate translation.

Follow the Embassy’s current checklist.

Step 10 — Attend the Visa Appointment

Provide the required documents and biometrics.

Germany’s standard national visa fee is generally:

€75

although exceptions may apply.

The German Embassy Yangon student checklist states that scholarship recipients funded entirely through German public funds may qualify for fee-free processing.

How Long Does a German Student Visa Take?

Do not book your entire future around a guaranteed processing time.

Germany’s Federal Foreign Office says student visas can take several weeks and, in individual cases, several months, partly because approval from the competent immigration authority in Germany may be necessary.

The Yangon Embassy’s published student checklist states that processing is commonly around four weeks, but may take longer in individual cases.

Apply as early as permitted and submit a complete application.

Does University Admission Guarantee a Student Visa?

No.

University admission is extremely important, but it does not guarantee visa approval.

German authorities still consider the complete application, including requirements involving:

  • Financial support
  • Documentation
  • Study eligibility
  • Language
  • Immigration requirements
  • Authenticity of documents
  • Other relevant circumstances

Never pay someone who claims:

“Once you have admission, the German visa is guaranteed.”

It is not.

Is a German Student Visa Realistic for Burmese Students?

For the right student, yes.

It may be particularly worth investigating if you:

  • Have a strong educational background
  • Can obtain university admission
  • Can satisfy the financial requirement
  • Can meet the language requirement
  • Actually want to complete a degree
  • Are prepared to live independently abroad
  • Want to build a professional career after graduation

The two biggest obstacles for many applicants will likely be:

1. University Eligibility

Your previous education must qualify you for your intended program.

2. Money

The blocked-account requirement alone represents a substantial amount of money for many families in Myanmar.

Scholarships therefore can be extremely important.

Student Visa Is Not an Asylum Visa

A German student visa is issued so that you can study.

Asylum is a completely separate legal protection process.

A Burmese citizen who is genuinely admitted to a German university may travel to Germany as a student.

If that person’s circumstances later create a genuine need for international protection, Germany has a separate asylum system.

But receiving a student visa does not automatically qualify someone for asylum, and the student visa should not be presented as a disguised asylum program.

Germany examines asylum claims individually.

Beware of Student Visa Scams

Be suspicious if someone tells you:

“Germany guarantees visas for Burmese students.”

“Pay me and I’ll get you admission.”

“I can guarantee a scholarship.”

“You don’t need financial proof.”

“You don’t need a real university.”

“I know someone inside the German Embassy.”

“Give me the blocked-account money and I’ll handle everything.”

Verify:

  • The university
  • The course
  • Tuition
  • Admission
  • Scholarship
  • Blocked-account provider
  • Visa instructions

through legitimate sources.

Quick Guide: Is the Germany Student Route for You?

I want a university degree.

Student Visa

I already have university admission.

→ Prepare the student visa application.

I want university but don’t have admission yet.

→ Research the visa for seeking a university place.

I would rather learn a trade and get paid while training.

→ Look at Ausbildung.

I already have a university degree and professional experience.

→ Compare the Opportunity Card, Skilled Worker Visa and EU Blue Card before starting another degree.

I am afraid to return to Myanmar because of persecution or serious harm.

→ Germany’s asylum and international protection system is a separate process.

After Graduation: The Most Important Part

For Burmese students thinking long term, do not look at the German student visa as the final destination.

Think of the possible pathway as:

University

German Degree

Up to 18 Months to Find Qualified Work

Skilled Worker Permit / EU Blue Card

Work in Germany

Potential Settlement Permit

Potential German Citizenship

The student visa itself is temporary.

The career you build after graduation is what can potentially turn studying in Germany into a permanent future.
