Where Can Burmese Citizens Go in 2026? Immigration, Work, Study & Visa Options by Country

How to Read This Chart

A green symbol does not mean a visa is easy to obtain. It means a legal pathway exists for Burmese citizens. This guide also considers the realities that often matter more: Can you actually find an employer? Do you need a degree? How much money do you need? Do you need to learn another language? And does the visa eventually allow permanent residence?

For many Burmese applicants, the biggest obstacle is not an official nationality ban. It is the economic cost of qualifying for the visa and surviving in the destination country until work begins.

* Living-cost numbers are rough planning estimates for one person, generally covering housing, food, transport and ordinary expenses. They are not tuition figures and not necessarily the amount immigration authorities require you to prove. Actual cost varies enormously by city and housing arrangement.

๐Ÿ”ด Countries with an actual Myanmar-specific restriction

The United States is by far the strongest restriction in this comparison. Effective January 1, 2026, the State Department says visa issuance is fully suspended for Burmese nationals across immigrant and nonimmigrant visa categories, with limited exceptions. That includes ordinary visitor, student, employment and immigrant visas.

The United Kingdom is different. It has not closed all visas to Burmese nationals; the Myanmar-specific โ€œvisa brakeโ€ affects the Student route. So I would never color the entire UK row red.

Bermuda also belongs in the actual-restriction category because Myanmar appears on its prohibited-entry nationality list, although qualifying exceptions mean it is not an absolute โ€œnobody gets inโ€ rule.

๐ŸŸข Important example: Germany

Germany is why the visa-type breakdown matters. I would not tell a Burmese person that Germany is easy for ordinary low-skilled employment.

But Ausbildung is different. Germany officially allows a vocational-training route, and a person seeking a training position can qualify without a university degree if they meet requirements including an eligible school qualification, generally B1 German, age under 35, and financial support. The 2026 financial requirement for the training-search route is โ‚ฌ1,091 per month.

And if you already secure company-based Ausbildung, the training salary itself can count toward supporting you. Germany says a 2026 company-training salary of at least โ‚ฌ1,048 gross / โ‚ฌ822 net per month can satisfy the livelihood requirement.

That is a huge distinction from paying international university tuition in Australia or Canada.

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Singapore: A Work Visa Exists, but Getting Hired Can Still Be Difficult

Singapore does allow Burmese nationals to work in certain industries. Myanmar is included under Singaporeโ€™s Non-Traditional Sources (NTS) system, which allows employers to hire workers from approved countries for specific occupations. Myanmar workers may also qualify for Work Permits in sectors such as the process industry.

However, this does not mean it is easy for a Burmese applicant to get a job in Singapore. Employers must follow occupation limits, quotas, and Work Permit rules. Under the NTS Occupation List, companies are also subject to an 8% sub-quota for these workers.

In practical terms, the visa pathway exists, but the harder part may be finding an employer who is both willing and legally able to hire you. For Burmese applicants, Singapore should be considered possible but competitive, rather than simply โ€œeasy.โ€

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Australia: Better for Skilled Workers Than Low-Budget Applicants Without a Degree

Australia offers several work and skilled migration pathways, but many of the strongest options are designed for people with specific qualifications, work experience, English ability, and an employer willing to sponsor them.

For example, the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) generally requires an approved employer to nominate the applicant for an eligible skilled position. Applicants must also meet the required skills and English-language requirements. The visa application fee alone can cost several thousand Australian dollars, before adding medical exams, documents, travel, and other relocation expenses.

This makes Australia a potentially strong destination for qualified professionals, but it is much less realistic for someone with limited savings, no university degree, and no specialized occupation. Saying that Australia is simply โ€œopenโ€ can therefore be misleading. A legal visa pathway may exist, but cost, qualifications, and employer sponsorship can make that pathway difficult to access in practice.

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ New Zealand: same idea

New Zealand has genuine routes to residence, but its Work to Residence pathway requires things such as an accredited employer, qualifying Green List employment, 24 months of qualifying New Zealand work, English and other requirements. The application cost currently starts at NZD 6,450.

Again: available โ‰  easy.
