Frequently Asked Questions

How does the calculator estimate grade placement?

It uses the child’s age on September 1 and a typical age-to-grade progression.

Does California assign every child’s grade only by age?

No. Age is useful for estimating placement, especially for TK, kindergarten, and first grade, but schools may consider prior education and academic records.

What if my child was retained or skipped a grade?

The calculator may not match the child’s actual placement. Entering a birth date cannot account for retention, acceleration, or prior district decisions.

What if my child is transferring from another school?

The receiving public school district may review transcripts, report cards, completed coursework, and prior placement before deciding the appropriate grade.

Is first-grade eligibility based on age?

California generally requires a child to be six on or before September 1 to be legally eligible for first grade, though limited exceptions may apply.

Does the calculator guarantee placement?

No. The school or district makes the final decision.
