Frequently Asked Questions
How is What is the California TK cutoff?
Starting with the 2025–26 school year, a child is age-eligible for TK if the child turns four on or before September 1 of that school year. September 1 is included.
Is TK required?
No. TK is optional. Families may choose another eligible preschool or early-learning program.
Can a district put an eligible child on a TK waiting list?
A district must provide access to TK for an age-eligible child, although the child may not receive a seat at the family’s preferred school site.
What if my child turns four after September 1?
The child does not meet the standard statewide TK cutoff for that school year. Ask the district whether it offers any locally permitted early-enrollment option or another preschool program.
Does this calculator guarantee enrollment?
No. It checks the statewide age rule only. The school district controls enrollment procedures, documentation, school assignment, and final placement.
